The launch of the new smartphones season is started. Last year for the smartphones was a little tricky. Big players weren’t able to attract many customers because of the small players, they are offering good specs just like any other flagship in a very value for money package. Just like last year, Samsung launched new phones in its event in San Francisco. The event was full of exciting announcements like new S series flag Samsung Galaxy S10 and its other variants which we find out later in the article. Well, we have shortlisted some of the major features and announcements which actually matters to the consumers. Here, are the Top 10 Announcements Made in the Samsung Unpacked Event.
10. Ultrasonic Fingerprint Scanner
Most of the manufacturer tried a different approach to achieve that bezel-less display. And of the concern to achieve is to place essential elements in different places. Previously, Samsung put its fingerprint scanner in the backside of the phone. On the other hand, other companies were trying to implement future tech which is in display finger scanner. Manufacturers have already done that but the results weren’t so good because of the existing technology. Well, Samsung has also done the same thing with a different approach. Instead of an optical sensor, they have introduced the world’s first ultrasonic sensor. This sensor makes unlocking experience more fast, smooth and reliable.
9. Triple Camera Setup
Samsung is well known for its great cameras and this year is not going to be any less. Front facing camera is similar in all three variants which are 10MP, f/1.9, autofocus. And there is one additional 8MP, f/2.2, autofocus for depth sensing. But this time rear cameras are getting different treatment. This time they are placing three cameras of different focal lengths i.e, Regular 12MP, f/1.5 or f/2.4, OIS, dual-pixel autofocus, Ultra-wide 16MP, f/2.2, No OIS, and Telephoto 12MP, f/2.4, OIS, phase-detect autofocus. But for the Samsung Galaxy S10E, there is no telephoto camera.
8. New Punch Hole Display
Every manufacturer is eager to achieve that bezel-less design in their smartphone by that means there is no border around the display. Just like you are holding a display in your hand. But it’s still a little far. Different companies tried different approach notch is the most famous one. And we have also seen some manufacturers to put pop-up cameras on their smartphone which is for sure not very reliable. Well, from last generation Samsung kept their infinity display with a small top and bottom bezels. But in this newer generation, they have come up with something new i.e, punch hole display. Well, Honor View 20 have also done that but that was an LCD display not considered very good as compare to OLED displays. There is smaller cut out in Galaxy S10 and S10E and a slightly bigger in S10+ for their dual front-facing camera.
7. New Samsung One UI
We all know about Samsung’s own version of Android i.e, TouchWiz. Previously it was a lot of things going on the UI and many of the bloatware which users never even use which makes users miss the clean and pure Android experience. Recently, Samsung launched its latest version and now it’s called One UI. There is a lot has been improved in this version. One of the major changes in the UI is shifting top elements a little lower so that it can be easily accessed by one hand. You’ll also find new designs of icons and redefine new colors in the UI.
6. Wireless Power Share, Wi-Fi 6 and Headphone Jack
Let’s first talk about headphone jack. Do you actually need it now? Well, a lot of companies don’t think so. Even the company like Oneplus which asked their users whether to keep headphone jack or not. And received a lot of positive response to keep headphone jack but in their flagship last Oneplus 6T they have removed the headphone jack for the bigger battery and optical sensor. But on the other hand, Samsung is on a different path. Even this year in their latest flagship they have to manage to keep headphone jack even with putting bigger batteries than before. Let’s see how long this trend will going to carry on.
Wi-Fi 6 is a little complicated but a future proof upgrade. First, let’s find what is new in Wi-Fi 6 and why we need to upgrade to it in a very simple language. There is definitely an increase in speed but how much that is still not very clear. Previously with Wi-Fi 5, you can get 3.5 Gbps and in Wi-Fi 6 you can get 9.6 Gbps of speed. But still, these are all on paper numbers. The major difference you can find with Wi-Fi 6 is with multiple connections with the same router. In Wi-Fi 6 they have introduced a new technology called MU-MIMO(multi-user, multiple inputs, multiple outputs) and OFDMA(orthogonal frequency division multiple access). It will take time to take full advantage of this technology.
Most of the flagships are now come with a wireless charging system in their phones. But few companies went beyond that. Like the Honor, Samsung also brings that same tech in their smartphone with a different name. These wireless coils work both ways. Now you can charge another wireless charging smartphone by placing in the back of the phone Cool right? Well, not much. The amount of output you get is very low. But it can charge your wireless earbuds which Samsung launches in this event. More on that later in the article.
5. Budget Galaxy S10E
Well, not exactly a budget phone but definitely cheaper than their bigger siblings. To achieve that price point Samsung does make some compromise in some places. Like there is no ultrasonic fingerprint. Instead, there is a regular fingerprint in the power button of the phone. Display size also a little small and don’t have curve edges like S10 and S10+. At least this makes this phone little more compact than the bigger phones. A telephoto lens is also missing from the back side of the phone. Well, we don’t think so it’s big of a deal because there are very few cases where you use a telephoto lens for your mobile photography. This Galaxy S10E is going to stand against iPhone XR which is Apple’s budget iPhone. It’s going to be interesting to see who impresses the consumer most.
4. Galaxy Buds
Samsung is one of the biggest competitors of Apple we all know. Samsung took the competition very seriously. They are trying to counter Apple in every aspect. So, here is the Galaxy Buds to compete with Apple’s Airpods. First thing first they are cheaper than Airpods and also comes with some cool features apart from just sounding good. Well, you must be thinking in your head an earbud sounds good that’s enough right? Well, not anymore. Let’s start the feature list. First big news it comes with USB-C charging so don’t need to bring a different charger for that. And also, buds case is a wireless charger. You can place your buds on any wireless charging pad and the great news is your S10 is now works as a charging pad for it. It has touch controls for navigation and dual mic system. Well, this will help during the call. It reduces noise from the outside and only listens to your voice.
3. Samsung Galaxy Watch Active
This Samsung Galaxy Watch Active is not the successor of the previous Samsung watches. It stands in a different segment. This watch is more focused on fitness. It has a 1.1-inch AMOLED display with 360 x 360 resolution which is enough for a smartwatch. But that cool rotating bezel is missing here. You have to navigate through the touch screen and two buttons on the side. There are many fitness features are baked in the watch. Like heart rate monitoring, sleep tracking, calories, exercise tracking, and it also supports Samsung Pay for wireless payment. It runs on Samsung’s Tizen 2.0 operating system.
2. Samsung Galaxy S10 5G
Samsung launched this year’s first 5G smartphone i.e, Samsung Galaxy S10 5G. Most of the features from this 5G version same from the other S10 devices except the view. Like display is the largest compared to other S10 devices which are 6.7-inch QHD dynamic AMOLED display. And a larger phone means a larger battery. So, the 5G version comes with 4,500 mAh battery which supports super fast charging through the wire and fast wireless charging 2.0. It has Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 with X50 modem which supports 5G bandwidth. Samsung will start shipping this 5G version during summer.
1. Samsung Galaxy Fold
Last year we have heard a lot about the foldable device and their concept phones. But that time doesn’t felt like it’s actually possible to fold a display. Samsung already teases about this project in November without revealing anything. Finally, Samsung unpacked their first foldable to the world. It has 7.3-inch infinity flex display make it tablet size and when you fold it become 4.6-inch display to easily fit in your pocket.
In the event Samsung says, it is the best device for multi-tasking and able to operate 3 apps in one time.
