This year in MWC Nokia again plays nostalgia game by launching Neo’s phone from the famous Matrix movie. Like the last year when they relaunched their popular Nokia 3110. Every geek had a fantasy to have that Neo’s cool phone from the Matrix but you could not have because it was too expensive.
Now you can live your dream with Nokia’s 8110. Don’t expect too much from this phone to have features as compared to other phones in 2018. But it doesn’t mean that it is just a phone to take calls and texting.
This new 8110 comes with Smart OS but it’s not able to run android apps as like the bigger Nokia phones. However, HMD is developing an app store for the device, so you can download basic apps like Facebook etc.
This new 8110 comes with Qualcomm’s 205 mobile chip with 512 MB of Ram and 4 GB of storage with 2.4-inch of QVGA display and 2 MP rear-facing camera.

8. Cat S61
Are you a kind of person who wants to buy a very solid, durable and rugged phone, obviously!! because you’re not that much of careful to handle glass design phone which cracks easily just by dropping from your bed. Then here it is Cat S61 an updated version from last years S60.
It has 5.2-inch IPS display covered with Gorilla glass 5. All the capacitive buttons are positioned below the display with very tactile clickiness. It is very easy to use even if you are wearing gloves in your hand. It is IP68 dust and water resistance and can you submerged up to 3 meters.
All these things are powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 630 with 4 GB of Ram and 64 GB of storage which you can expand by using microSD. It also comes with Android 8.1 out of the box and promised to get Android P as soon as it gets released. It massive 4500 mAh battery can easily survive the whole day. There is also not much revolutionary about cameras. It has 8 MP of front-facing camera and 16 MP of rear-facing which can shoot 4K videos.
Well, it doesn’t mean everything is boring about this phone. It has some unique features which no other manufacturer offers. It has a thermal camera which can measure temperatures up to 400 degrees Celsius. It’s built-in laser which can measure distance. And also has an indoor air quality sensor which can really help in extreme environments.
7. Sony Xperia XZ2
Finally, after a long time, Sony has changed its smartphone design language from rectangular brick to the beautiful aluminum and glossy back. A little familiar to HTC U11 but still, this is a welcome change after 2013. And the front profile of the phone also changed from chunky big bezels to smaller one but still have enough room for Sony to put their logo.
The camera is now shifted to center above the fingerprint sensor. Well, yes this time you’ll get the fingerprint in the right position from the power button where Sony always used to put which works double as fingerprint and power button but Sony disabled fingerprint in few regions.
This time Sony is limiting to 5.7-inch FHD+ display with 2160 x 1080 resolution apart from last years 4k display which is a nice move to get better battery life. And also you can’t tell much difference between 4k and 2k display in a phone unless you use for VR handset. And display also supports HDR content and it also converts SDR content to HDR automatically.
Every flagship launching in 2018 is expected to come with flagship features so do Sony. Under the hood, it comes with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 with 4 GB of Ram and 64 GB storage with microSD slot. Sony’s close stock UI with Android 8 makes it a very snappy performing phone.
Last years XZ grabs the attention of everyone by its super cool ultra slo-mo mode camera which was able to record slow-motion video at 960 fps in 720p. This year they have continued the feature with the enhancement of quality. Now with 19 MP sensor, you can record that same slow-motion in 1080p. And also you can Sony’s cool 3D creator in front-facing camera.
Not all the changes are good new Sony phone. Following the trending in the market, Sony also drops the headphone jack. Sad isn’t it ?. The company who was popular for their music smartphones and supported Hi-Fi audio on their phones. In consolation, they are offering AptX HD and LDAC codecs for streaming Hi-Fi quality audio through Bluetooth handsets.
Sony also introduces a feature with the tagline “feel your media”. In which phone produces a vibration according to the media your playing on your phone. You can customize it as per your need like if you don’t want that feedback on your youtube app you can disable it. Future will decide if that becomes a selling point for Sony.
6. Nokia 8 Sirocco
Once the mobile phone industry leader Nokia is now trying very hard to regain their position. For that, they have now tied up with HMD global who now design smartphones for Nokia. This year in MWC 2018, Nokia launched three mainline smartphones i.e, Nokia 8 Sirocco, Nokia 7 Plus and Nokia 6. From all these, 8 Sirocco is the flagship and is more interesting to look at. HMD introduces new all glass design with stainless-steel chassis in Nokia phone.
5.5-inch POLED display with 2560 x 1440 resolution is stretched all over to the side edges of the phone which gives you a little feel of Samsung Edge 6. Bezels are also shrunk to smaller than before to make it 18:9 ratio display. Glass back of the phone is very reflective and fingerprint magnetic so don’t forget to clean it in regular intervals to make it look new. And also now fingerprint is moved for better reachability.
Don’t expect too much very exciting from the camera. It does come with 12 MP dual camera setup with ZEISS optics lens. But pictures are not very impressive. For front-facing, it has 5 MP camera with HMD’s bothie mode in which you can picture from both the cameras simultaneously. But in camera software now you have Pro mode comes from Lumia phone in which you make manually adjust white balance, ISO, and other things.
Launching in 2018 and having flagship chipset from last year is a little weird. Sirocco is powered by Qualcomm’ Snapdragon 835 with 6 GB of Ram. For storage, it comes with 64 and 128 GB options. It is launching under the name of the Android One project that means you’ll get monthly security updates and the latest version of Android as soon as it will release.
There is one thing worth mentioning that it doesn’t come with the headphone jack. Yes, guys one more device which force you to buy Bluetooth headphones or use an adapter to use your older headphones.
5. Asus Zenfone 5Z
Well if you think this is an iPhone X then you are wrong and even if you think this is an iPhone Clone then you are wrong again because this device is running on Android. You like it or avoid it iPhone X’s notch design but you definitely can’t ignore because now it’s trending and you’ll see many phones adopting the same design as Zenfone 5Z did.
Its notch is smaller than the iPhone X because it doesn’t have FaceID unlock kind of cool or any sensors to measure points in your face but it does come with a face unlock feature which is obviously not secure as the fingerprint.
Asus has chosen this notch design for the phone to achieve 90 percent screen to body ratio that means very small bezels all around the display. Asus has chosen to go with 6.2-inch LCD display which is less superior than OLED display. But it still has 2246 x 1080 which fairly decent.
It does complete the need to be called a flagship from the inside. It has Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 chipset with the maximum 8 GB of Ram and 256 GB of storage options. And again its camera placement is identical to iPhone X but it’s fine because it does offer better image quality. It has dual camera setup with 12 MP primary which has 1.4-micron pixels which is not much far from Google Pixel. And secondary 8 MP wide-angle camera for the depth effect pictures for the portrait shots.
For the selfie, it has 8 MP front-facing which takes decent images. Asus saying phone comes with several AI features. As for the photography, it automatically adjusts all the settings as per the environment.
Considering its size, it is loaded with 3,300 mAh of the battery which is fairly decent and easily gives you the whole day of usages. Asus introduces a feature this time called AI boost. It works like that when you put your phone in charging at night it charges up to 80 percent and holds there and analyze your wake-up time and then goes all the way to 100 percent.
4. Android Go
Android Go, Googles another attempt to run Android smoothly on inexpensive phones. In simple words, low-end performance phones with lesser Ram and Storage. Previously Google launched Android one project for the same cause but it didn’t work well. So then Google transformed it into Stock Android. These Android Go mobiles are especially targeting countries like India and Africa where inexpensive phones are more popular.
What Google is doing with Android Go edition is they are compressing the size. In Android Oreo go edition, the whole OS is just of 3 GB which a couple of gigabits less from the original version. This whole move is made for targeting the phones which comes in only 8 GB.
Google also developed other Google apps for this go edition like Gmail Go, Google Assitant Go, Maps Go, Youtube Go, Google Go which is completely redesigned for go edition which has quick access features like translation, image search and a special GIF’s section from which you can quickly access “Good Morning GIF’s” which is very popular in India we know guys it is annoying for some person but you can’t help it, its there and get ready to receive more “Good Morning” messages. These small sizes of apps achieved by disabling unnecessary features. You can also the original version from the play store if you want.
Many manufacturers already launched their Android Go edition phones. Some of the popular companies are Nokia 1, Alcatel’s 1X, ZTE’s Tempo Go, Lava’s Z50, Micromax’s Bharat Go, and General Mobile’s GM 8 Go.
3. Huawei Matebook X Pro
Huawei launched the next-generation model of last years Matebook X. Design is the department where you can see major of changes. It has a very beautiful and attractive design with very small bezels all around the display which is 91 percent screen to body ratio.
It has a 13.9-inch display with 3000 x 2000 resolution with a 3: 2 aspect ratio for Surface-style. You must be thinking with these small bezels where they have put the webcam. Well, it is between F6 and F7 key on the keyboard. Yeah, it is a weird location for a webcam but you have to make few sacrifices to achieve these kinds of design. So deal with it.
It has a capacitive touchscreen so you can also use it as a Tablet. And In addition to the Pro model, you’ll get a Mate pen which is just like the Surface pen which is very helpful for creators. And also this year they have put second-generation Dolby Atmos Surround Sound with quad speakers.
For the specs, it will come Inter Core i5 or i7 processor with two RAM options 8 GB with 256 GB of storage and 16 GB with 512 GB of storage. And also NVIDIA GeForce MX150 graphics card with 2GB of GDDR5 RAM for better gaming performance and video editing. For the I/O, there are two USB-C ports, one Thunderbolt 3, Headphone jack and one USB-A port for connecting your older devices.
For the battery, it has 57.4 Wh battery which they are claiming to deliver 14 works of usages and takes around 2-3 hours to fully charge it again.
2. Vivo Apex Concept Phone
One of the best device this year in MWC 2018 was Vivo Apex Concept Phone in terms of innovation. In all over the industry, there is a trend to shrink bezels of the phone as much as possible. But the question arises where to put front-facing and fingerprint sensor. For the fingerprint, most of the companies start putting it in the back of the phone and for the front-facing camera, they start putting a weird notch. But Vivo has chosen a different approach for both the problems.
In CES, they have showcased the world’s first fingerprint scanner inside the display. Now they upgraded it and putting it in the bottom half portion of the phone. So you can put your finger anywhere in that location. But still, this is only possible with the OLED display because it doesn’t need any backlighting as like LCD displays. And they have put the front-facing camera behind the screen. It rolls out when you switch to selfie mode. Neat solution right.
The display covers 91 percent of the phone so there is no room for tradition earpiece for calling. For that also, Vivo has chosen the different approach. Unlike the Mi Mix, where they piezoelectric design in which whole frame vibrates to produce sound. But in Vivo’s they are vibrating whole display to produce sound.
1. Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus
Well, Samsung steals the show by launching the newer versions of their last years Galaxy lineup i.e, Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus. You can’t find many visual changes in the front of the phone with a little smaller bezels from last years which 1.2 mm smaller for S9 and 1.4 mm for S9 Plus. And they are still Quad HD+ Curved Super AMOLED displays which is the most beautiful looking display in smartphones. 5.8-inch for S9 and 6.2-inch for S9 Plus with 18.5:9 aspect ratio and there are 15 percent brighter than last years S8.
Most of the visual changes you can find are in the back portion of the phone. By taking feedback from the many users Samsung and shifted fingerprint sensor below the camera. Well, it is still very confusing when trying to unlock your phone and accidentally put your finger on camera because they’re so close to each other and you can’t differentiate quickly. But at least there is a step closer to perfection.
Camera, the most talked feature of S9 and S9 Plus. This time they are coming with a mechanism with a variable aperture which you find in professional DSLR cameras. Explaining variable aperture in simple words, that aperture lets the light come in the sensor as per the requirement. Like when you are outdoor and there is a lot of lights then camera opens smaller i.e, f/2.4 aperture so that not much of light hits the sensor to wash out the picture and when you are in a darker location camera opens wider i.e, f/1.5 aperture to get more lights to hit the sensor to get the brighter image.
You can manually adjust these apertures in Pro mode or in automatic settings if you don’t want to play with it. It will automatically adjust the aperture as per the requirement. S9 has Dual Pixel 12 MP and S9 Plus has dual camera setup with 12 MP wide lens and 12 MP telephoto lens for capturing look bokeh shots.
In addition to new features, Samsung comes with newer Image Sensor Processor has its own DRAM. It takes multiple shots in the night situation select the best image with less noise reduction. This all happens in the background and you can’t even notice it. With the help of image processing, Samsung introduces super slow motion video at 960 fps in 720p. It captures 0.2 seconds of video into a 7-second clip. It automatically detects the motion and starts recording. And finally also get stereo speakers with Dolby Atoms for better media consumption on your phone. And Samsung DeX is also upgraded to newer version.
Samsung also introduces a new feature called AR Emoji which is Samsung’s answer to Apple’s Animoji. But it is not so good because Samsung is only using the front-facing camera to analyze your face. And creates an animated character which is not even close to your actual face. And also Samsung continues their own personal assistant Bixby with S9 and S9 Plus which is a little intelligent than before but not much. It translates any text written in the different language to English by using the camera.
For the specification, it comes with Qualcomm’s flagship chip Snapdragon 845 with 4 GB of RAM for S9 and 6 GB of RAM for S9 Plus. Both the devices have 64 GB of storage option which you can expand up to 256 GB using microSD. And the battery, the smaller one come with 3000 mAh and the bigger one with 3500 mAh which is fairly decent easily gives you the whole day of usages because of the newer chipset which optimizes battery very well.
